Mary and John's story

Mary contacted RSABI last year when her husband, John, was no longer able to work due to ill health. John had worked in farming for over 30 years. They were waiting for benefits claims to be processed and in the meantime had no money to buy food or pay for heating costs for them and their two young children.  

We organised an immediate payment for them to be able to manage until their benefits were awarded, this helped with rent and essential food and heating.  

Moving from a steady income to benefits was quite a shock initially and we helped over Christmas by sourcing toys from a local toy appeal and Christmas food from a private donation.  

Losing his job, his ill health and not being able to provide for his family took its toll on John. We were able to pay for counselling sessions to help him come to terms with the fact that his health would prevent him from doing farm work again. We also supported both Mary and John with regular phone calls. Since then, John’s health has improved sufficiently to allow him to do part-time voluntary work and this has given him his confidence back.
